DVD I, ,Lutegerus sword and buckler of I.33 part I “Intention” :

me/pete

This is the first Boar’s Tooth training DVD, it focuses on the correct positioning of the half shielded* approach and it’s applications against the first ward.*

  • Filmed from instructor to student format, The DVD is broken down into easy to process sections, building an increasingly complex series of moves into a cohesive, self referencing and pressure sensitive sequence.

capture2.JPG

  • A perfect guide for those with no knowledge of the system, (rather than the Latin terms English ones are used for ease of understanding).

capture8.JPG

  • A perfect training aid for the advanced practitioner, offering valuable insight for those familiar with the text, the DVD puts moves in the correct and logical sequence, with clear explanation of weaknesses in incorrect form, the logic applied to each position and technique.

*The swords used in I.33 use a cruciform hilt, if in order to approach the opponent you hold your sword hand forward, he will strike it off. Using the buckler in the left hand, I.33 offers a partial cover for the right hand( it being a flattish and not a basket object it cannot encompass the sword hand fully), covering of the hand is called the half shield and is used to steal distance form the opponent.

**I.33 if you don’t know, breaks the body/sword relation down into seven geometric divisions, first ward is anywhere with the sword anywhere beneath the left arm).

About the DVD they said:

J Marwood (combative instructor)
Dave’s I.33 is frankly superb and Dave himself is one of the best martial artists I have ever worked with. I’m very, very impressed with this DVD, the material itself is very good and Dave gives very clear and easy to follow instruction. Dave’s interpretation is very, very robust. I’ve seen a number of different instructors give their interpretations and Dave’s is one of the best and it is clear this has been pressure tested to a high degree.

Chris King:
Please do yourselves a favor and buy this dvd. We are certainly excited to have such a textured, well thought out interpretation at our disposal. I have been informed that some of the points raised in this interpretation might be a tad controversial. I personally don’t care about controversy, I care about quality, and with this DVD I got it! For me this WMA movement is an adventure as well as a venture!

For anyone involved in I.33 studies this DVD is a must. In fact, not having it is just silly. And YES, it works here in the U.S.

This is exactly how knowledge should be shared. if you have any interest at all in I.33 you should get this DVD.

Just like to say thanks to Dave and his team for the work they put in to the DVD. Bought it, watched it, loved it. Well done guys. This is a must buy for anyone researching I.33 or just wanting a good start in sword and buckler. I also liked Dave’s commitment to one of my bug-bears… intent of the strike.

Thanks guys

I can see Dave Rawlings’ DVD has already generated lots of discussion, so I’ll just add a list of things that I really like about the DVD and his interpretation:

- The “bent torso” position which Dave adopts more closely approximates the position shown in many of I.33’s illustrations. Technically, it makes sense for the same reason that Salvator Fabris adopted it 300 years later: It shrinks the target area, making it easier to shelter behind the strong of the blade.

- I like Dave’s focus on the contextual (ie, pressure, distance) and tactical reasons for certain reactions, whether it be the grapple, durchtritt, or mutacio gladii.

- Dave’s fast, hard style shows a more aggressive side to I.33. The manual’s illustrations can often look somewhat stilted; seeing the techniques come to life with speed, power and accuracy will be an eye-opener to anyone starting out with this material.

- The DVD has a stark, minimalist look that I like.

- Finally, the DVD does a good job of showcasing Dave as a swordsman, which is good in itself. Having done a fair amount of training with Dave over the years, I’ve come to appreciate his skills as a martial artist and a swordsman; now others can get a glimpse of what I’ve seen. Now we just need to get some good footage of him with a longsword…

This is exactly the sort of thing that keeps these arts interesting and exciting. It really is quite nice to have a product that is so richly layered with information. Please tell me that you will continue on with such wicked cleverness.

Well I have now managed to look at your video a couple of times and I have got to say something.

If I could howl like a wolf I would. This is really good Dave, a very incisive video. The feeling I get after seeing it is that you have a long and far seaching road to come to these conclusion: clear, simple, logical and dare I say it - full of martial spirit that few people posses or exhibit. And I know you are holding back your full power.

I know you have broken lots of fencing masks arriving where you are, though I think each one was worth the effort.

After watching I was left with a time travel feeling: combat which was swift, effective and deadly. The master kills the common fighter and does it without breaking sweat, people in the market place watch in awe as he finishes the task in a few swift moves.

If this was not how they wanted the 1.33 to be done, then I would say your video shows an interpretation which looks very, very effective AND includes the positions seen in the book and follows the plays as presented.

I for one cannot wait for your next offering, which I know will be of the same level of competence, spirit and power, not to mention the quality of the martial content.

I also liked the presentation style as it came over like a personal lesson from you and not like an anonymous voice from the void.

Keep it up Dave, you are leading the way in many areas…………..
